Hello. Thanks for clicking on my bio. I live in the middle of England, in Leicestershire (we say it “Lester-shire” — yep, British spelling is weird). I’m the author of more than eighty books published in the UK and am a children’s poet, so I’m thrilled to bits to have my new rhyming picture book with Candlewick.
When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time hanging upside down from the branches of trees, dreaming of being a circus acrobat. My handwriting was awful (it still is!), so I didn’t like writing very much at school. After I left, I was an archeologist in London, a teacher in Wales, and a library assistant at Antwerp International School in Belgium. I didn’t become an author/poet until I was more than forty years old!
I love animals of all shapes and sizes, country walks, chocolate, hot tea, and fossil hunts (I have a big collection of fossilized sharks’ teeth). Most of all, I love meeting up with my sons and their families and playing with my three granddaughters — one lives in the UK and two in North Carolina, so I'm a regular visitor to the USA..
And it’s always fun to make author visits to nurseries and elementary schools—in person or on Skype.
